5/5/10 – Wednesday

Gave dose at 8:50 am w/apple sauce in two bites.
Today is starting without Zeke’s Olympus. Batteries died yesterday after school and he had a fit over it. He has been dependent on the Olympus for a couple of weeks solid now. So, I am imposing a break from it due to last night’s episode.
Zeke also had a ½” long splinter removed from his hand last night, which he got from his bed frame. He has developed a habit of dragging his teeth along the frame and it has created splinters in some areas. To pull the splinter out, I had to squeeze his hand and get part of the sliver to come out of the entry point. As I asked Zeke if this hurt, he responded to me with the same question. “Is this hurting me?” Fortunately, it was a quick process, but a sliver that large HAD to be somewhat painful. Zeke really only flinched from the language of it.

  3. When Zeke got home from school I asked him how his day went. His eye contact was focused. He said his day was "Great."
I then asked him how his body felt. He looked at me and I could see him searching for words. He said, "My heart was sick for a little bit."
Hmm. My next question was "Was your heart sick because you were sad?" He responded, "No. It hurt a little bit but stopped."
When I asked him how it hurt he was unable to find words, and was beginning to get frustrated at the length of the conversation. I asked him a leading question- but from his response he appeared to be answering genuinely. I took my hand to my chest like he does when he's drumming and I said, "Did your heart hurt like this (THUMP. THUMP. THUMP.) or did your heart hurt like this (thumpthumpthumpthump).
    Zeke: thumpthumpthumpthump.
I then asked if he had been upset when his heart was thumping so fast, and he said "no, I was doing my good work." He said that he felt it in the morning at 10:25 (by the look on his face I'm not sure if the time is reliable) and that he was doing math.

His appetite at dinner was good, and he ate everything on his plate. We are doing structured dinners at the table (which he DOES NOT like) and there was a definite change in his focus level and attitude. He was also much more able to participate and even direct conversation. Much of it was typical of Zeke and geared toward subjects and words that he likes to hear repeated, but there was more flexibility than normal.
